Family Experiences at Ko Olina
Where Family Memories Begin
Some of the most memorable vacations are the ones we share with family and friends. From peaceful mornings beside Ko Olina's lagoons to exploring the beauty and adventures of Oʻahu, every day brings an opportunity to reconnect, discover, and create lasting memories.
Whether you're traveling with young children, grown children, extended family, or a group of close friends, the Beach Villas at Ko Olina offer a beautiful place to come together and enjoy the island at your own pace.
A Perfect Day at the Lagoon
Pack the beach cart with chairs, a cooler, and beach toys, and head down to the beautiful lagoon just steps from your villa. Ko Olina's man-made lagoons are sheltered by rock barriers, creating calm, inviting waters for swimming and snorkeling. Spend the afternoon soaking up the sunshine, building sandcastles with the little ones, or simply relaxing on the sand with your favorite people. With everything close by, it's easy to make a whole day of it.
A Little Poolside Paradise for Everyone
Sometimes the best vacation days are the ones without a schedule. Find a comfortable lounge chair beside the quiet adult lap pool, settle in with a good book, and enjoy the Hawaiian sunshine. For family fun, head to the beautifully landscaped lagoon pools with their rock features and inviting spas. There's even a sandy-bottom pool designed for younger children, so little ones can enjoy some splash time too.
Family BBQs, Sunset Dinners & Island Evenings
One of the pleasures of staying at the Beach Villas is being able to gather around the poolside BBQs for a relaxed family dinner. Picture surf and turf sizzling on the grill, refreshing drinks, music drifting over from Makai Hale Beach Bar, and a beautiful Hawaiian sunset as the backdrop.
Your villa also has a fully equipped kitchen with cookware, dishes, and utensils, making it easy to prepare everything from a family feast to simple beach snacks. Whether you're cooking together, gathering around the BBQ, or enjoying a cocktail on your private lanai, it's a wonderful way to spend an evening.
Oceanfront Walks & An Unforgettable Sunset Sail
One of our favorite ways to start or end the day is walking along Ko Olina's scenic 2.2-mile paved oceanfront pathway. Connecting the four lagoons, neighboring resorts, and Ko Olina Marina, it's a beautiful setting for an early morning walk or a leisurely sunset stroll.
And speaking of sunsets, one experience our family especially loved was a catamaran sail departing from Ko Olina Marina. We enjoyed the ocean breeze, met wonderful people, and were lucky enough to see sea turtles and playful spinner dolphins along the way. Watching the sun disappear over the Pacific, followed by the moon rising, made the evening unforgettable. It's one of those special experiences we love recommending to families and friends.
A Walk to Dinner, Live Music & Something Sweet
You don't always need to get in the car for a fun evening out. Take a leisurely walk from the Beach Villas to Monkeypod Kitchen, one of our favorite gathering spots in Ko Olina. Enjoy fresh island-inspired cuisine, handcrafted cocktails, and a lively atmosphere with live music. Their popular Happy Hour is a wonderful time to stop by for discounted drinks and appetizers.
After dinner, save room for something sweet at Black Sheep Cream Co., where small-batch artisan ice cream comes in creative, unexpected flavors. Part of the fun is watching the finishing touches, like marshmallows being toasted with a torch right on top of your ice cream cone! It's a delicious and entertaining way to end the evening, especially when you're sharing the experience with family and friends.
All Aboard! A Journey into Hawaiian History
For history buffs, train enthusiasts, or families looking for something a little different, it's all aboard Hawaiʻi's only operating historic railway!
Operated by the Hawaiian Railway Society, this living railroad museum preserves a restored 6.5-mile stretch of the historic Oahu Railway & Land Company (OR&L) railroad corridor. The leisurely two-hour round-trip journey takes you along Oʻahu's leeward coast, passing through the Ko Olina area, with views of the Waiʻanae Mountains and the ocean. It's a relaxing, nostalgic experience that brings generations together.
Check the Hawaiian Railway Society's website for current schedules, tickets, and reservations before visiting.
Chasing Rainbows at Diamond Head
Why not go searching for gold at the end of the rainbow? One of our favorite island adventures is hiking to the summit of Diamond Head, where the reward is a spectacular panoramic view of Honolulu, the coastline, and the Pacific Ocean.
The Diamond Head Summit Trail is a short but steep 1.6-mile round trip, climbing approximately 560 feet from the crater floor to the summit. Along the way, you'll navigate switchbacks, stairs, and a historic military tunnel before reaching those unforgettable views.
For families, we'd recommend this adventure for older children and active seniors who are comfortable with stairs and an uphill climb. It's a wonderful way to experience a different side of Oʻahu and capture some memorable family photographs. We were lucky enough to see rainbows!
Visitors who are not Hawaiʻi residents should make advance reservations for entry and parking.
